How To Use Perplexity For Finance
Bloomberg Terminal is a $30,000/year investment and Perplexity will do it better for $20/month!
Perplexity for Finance recently got a massive upgrade, and its mere existence raises some questions:
Why pay enterprise prices for data you can get with consumer AI?
Let’s say you receive the signal that a certain stock experienced unusual trading volumes, and you want to know why. Then Perplexity for Finance now offers a variety of tools to help you learn more about the company quickly:
High-level Market Research: Real-time news and stock indicators. In my opinion, most helpful for a high-level understanding of companies. This includes Morningstar premium research for free.
Financial Document Analysis: Since most respectable companies have Investor Relationship websites where you can download PDFs and Excel files, which you then can upload for Retrieval-Augmented Generation. Combine this with the prompts below to supplement the uploaded document with the most recent news and other data.
Scenario analysis: Quick and dirty scenario analysis (e.g., portfolio impact based on interest rate hits) without needing to go into Python or Excel.
Document fetching: Perplexity is really good in their source attributions. Ask for source citations on primary sources of exactly what you need (eg, transcripts, SEC filings)
With this offering, I’d see Perplexity evolve into a credible threat to Bloomberg if they can capture trust and actual workflow integrations. The driver for this, however, is access to high-quality and unique data. Data is MOAT.
As of this writing, Perplexity has integrated its data from these sources:
Financial information provided by Financial Modeling Prep (API)
Options data provided by Unusual Whales.
Live transcripts provided by Quartr.
Reported revenue and EPS data from Earnings, powered by FinChat.io.
FactSet's Merger & Acquisition data,
Crunchbase's firmographic data and company files.
Maybe driven by the Wall Street Bets debacle, we've seen retail investors come back into investing in a big way in the last few years, and tools like this will only continue to help level the playing field. In fact, retail participation more than doubled from 2010 (~10%) to 2025 (~20–25%).
So, I think we can conclude that Perplexity in Finance is on the way to becoming a really fantastic product.
How to use it?

Below are some prompts that I have used in my discussion with Perplexity that helped me get better insights in higher quality faster. In case the UI is not clear. You can use the “search in table” function to well…search the table. Of course, this is a work in progress. All prompts are at your own risk.
Of course, you could also use these prompts if you need more inspiration.
In closing
AI tools like these make market research and comparative analysis much easier, but we all know that summarization can still omit relevant nuances, models may hallucinate, or information might be misinterpreted. Therefore, human in the workflow is still a very important part of the process.
But also, the productivity gains for Hedge Funds and Family offices are obvious.
